Mehbooba (1976)

The story follows Suraj (Rajesh Khanna), a singer who is engaged to Rita (Asha Sachdev). Suraj and Ratna vow to meet again in their next life.

Years later, Suraj meets Jhumri (also Hema Malini), a gypsy girl who is the reincarnation of Ratna. He makes her remember their past life and their love for each other. However, this angers Rita and Popatlal (Prem Chopra), who wants to marry Jhumri. They try to separate Suraj and Jhumri, but they overcome all the obstacles and consummate their relationship this time.

The film was a silver jubilee hit in many territories, but did not do well in Mumbai. It has gained a cult following over the years.

Mehbooba (2008) is a romance film written, produced and directed by Afzal Khan. The film is loosely inspired by the 1976 film, but has a different storyline and characters. The music of the film was composed by Ismail Darbar.

The story follows Shravan (Sanjay Dutt), a rich playboy who seduces Varsha (Manisha Koirala), a beautiful woman whom he meets at a party. He proposes marriage to her, but only to sleep with her. He dumps her after their holiday and breaks her heart. Varsha leaves the country and changes her name to Payal.

Ten years later, Payal meets Karan (Ajay Devgn), a young artist who falls in love with her. He tells her that she is the woman he sees in his dreams and proposes marriage to her. She agrees and they start preparing for their wedding. However, things take a turn when Shravan, who is revealed to be Karan's brother, arrives in the village. He recognizes Payal as Varsha and tries to win her back. Payal rejects him and tells him that she loves Karan. Shravan confesses his mistake to Karan and asks for forgiveness. He dies in Karan's arms after being shot by Popatlal, who wanted to marry Payal.

The film was shot in 2000, but got delayed and released in 2008. It received negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. It was declared a disaster at the box office by Box Office India.
